Month-full of Moncton
A month in Bali(opens in new tab) inspired six (6) blog posts; a month in Moncton New Brunswick merits one (1). But a good one.
We’re not here to see many Great Sites (that’s the whole skyline in the photo above). Atlas Obscura(opens in new tab) lists a whopping two (2) cool and unusual things to do within city limits. We pass on Magnetic Hill(opens in new tab) (“a mysterious spot where the laws of gravity seem not to apply”), but do get an inordinate thrill from the Moncton Tidal Bore(opens in new tab) - a single wave that, twice a day, rolls against the current for 29 kilometers (18 miles) up the Petitcodiac River from the Bay of Fundy. A similar bore in China reaches 30 feet in height; ours is a polite Canadian version, apologizing at it rumbles along at 1-24 inches high - still enough for some enthusiasts to regularly surf upriver.
Moncton: Mecca for Knee-Replacement Recovery
Most people don’t choose Moncton to recover from knee surgery, but they should. It is flat, quiet, and bursting with walking (and biking) paths. As Sarah builds her strength to walking over 6,000 steps (3 miles) per day, we explore many different forested parks, aqueduct paths, and portion-by-portion of the 20km long riverfront trail. And we come to appreciate the delicate beauty of the marsh ecosystem.
Crêpes and Cars and Kids
As I wrote in my last blog post(opens in new tab), we are also here to enjoy time with our son and fiance. Tuning in to the rhythm of their post-college We Have Jobs And A Real Apartment And A Cat life, we capture moments and photos of a rich, comfortable everyday Moncton.
Would I recommend Moncton as a month-long tourist destination? Um, no! But as a liveable walkable place with a chance to connect and coexist with loved ones, we found plenty to enjoy and a surprising amount of beauty to share.
