Quebec City

Quebec City gate

Three nights in Quebec City - not enough to see everything, but enough to drink it all in, absorb the magic and uniqueness that is North America's only fortified city (it's a UNESCO World Heritage site).

Taking our own advice from an earlier post, we broke up a long drive out of Nova Scotia into three segments, giving us a lovely night in Fredericton (20 minutes of sightseeing suffices, but it is a lovely 20 minutes...), a forgettable night in Kingston, and in between those, three unforgettable nights in Quebec.

Two days and three nights of nothing but walking, eating, toboganning down to the Chateau Frontenac, shopping, watching skaters at the Quebec version of Rockefeller Center, outdoor Christmas markets with live music, a cat-refuge cafe, Canada's oldest library, and working the rust out of our French.  We ate our way through town, each evening going to one place to share an appy, a second for a main course, a third for dessert, each one a culinary explosion unto itself.

Advice?  Stay right in old town inside the walls.  Eat everything everywhere as often as you can.  Walk, walk, walk, day and night.  Use whatever French you can muster.  Stay as many days as you can (we're thinking of a month next time...)  Most of the past three months have been trying out short-term living in new places, or visits with dear friends - a few days of pure touristing was fantastique!
