No Kings (except Elvis)

No Kings

Last weekend’s No Kings march was mostly business as usual. Clever signs and costumes. The flood of relief of being in a big group of people who still believe in humanity and democracy. Even an occasional glimmer of hope.

But three things still surprised me.

1. Size Matters

We know there’d be a crowd, but seven million people carrying one million signs is darn impressive. We’re feeling Down, but apparently not Out yet. And enough of us still believe it might make a difference to stand up and speak out.

We didn’t reach the 3.5% marker that studies show can lead to actual regime change. But it was one of the largest single-day marches in American history.

2. Trump Really Does Give a Shit

You gotta know it peeved him that the “No Kings” protests had 14 times the turnout of his two inaugurations combined. His dismissal of it all was no surprise.

But even I was surprised that an American president - even Trump - could so brazenly attack and dismiss the American citizens he is supposed to represent and serve. My MAGA buddies will say I’m just a typically over-sensitive leftist, but an elected president choosing to post an image of himself in a crown dumping feces on American citizens is a line that even Saturday Night Live wouldn’t cross.

For good measure, they even added images of Vice President J.D. Vance in a royal crown, suggesting that American democracy has been supplanted by tyranny that will last past Trump into the future. This is no joke - the possibility of a 3rd Trump presidency is very real, brought to you by the party that calls itself the defenders of the Constitution and Democracy.

3. Sorry Huey, I Felt the Love but not the Power

It was lovely being in the middle of thousands and millions of fellow like-minded humans, but I felt out of place. After two years living outside the US, we felt more like allies than members.

It also didn’t fill me with hope. I watch this administration’s open disregard for the law, the constitutional freedoms and processes, and especially the dignity of people. I read Heather Cox Richardson and Dan Rather analyzing the mammoth collapse of all the systems that should hold Trump in check. I read Charlie Angus tracking how my beloved Canada is starting to slide down the same treacherous slope

And I follow my MAGA friend’s open glee every time a protester is beaten (“they should use real bullets next time”). The strategically-stoked fear and hate and scapegoating overpowering the inner goodness and strength and love that makes him my friend.

As a Quaker I truly believe that every single person (even Trump!) has a chunk of goodness and light within, but I don’t see the American people trying to operate from that place. The Right are promoting hate, the Left are reacting in fear and defence. I’ve lost sight of how to get back to a place of healthy respectful debate, a common vision of serving the American public with dignity and decency. I enjoyed the love and humour at the rally but I don’t feel power or vision or, increasingly, hope.

If anyone can help me believe again, it’s our elders who have a longer view of the ebbs and flows, the arc that MLK promises will keep bending towards justice. As much as I enjoyed the clever insulting signs, to some extent they still fuel the vitriol and divide. These final two photos show the spirit I need to tap into to (quoting an old Quaker song) walk in the light, wherever it may be.

thank you sooo much for this Rick! We need to call each other back to the center of it all and ‘the power of love’.

Lots MORE going on than MSM is depicting……. These times remind me of what a mentor once recommended to me: when you read the bible, read between the lines. These is the same recommendation for these times. We are living in the times of Revelations – the great revealing.
